Mitski has always been an artist present in my life, not just in playlists, but as someone who creates deeply valuable expressions of sorrow and emotion. I’ve heard her music here and there for years, each song feeling like it was carrying something heavier than the notes themselves.

When The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We came out, I decided to really give it my full attention, to listen through from start to finish, the way an album is meant to be experienced. And I’m glad I did.

While most people instantly fell in love with “My Love Mine All Mine” (and rightfully so), I found myself digging deeper into the album, uncovering the hidden gems that make it such a personal and layered body of work.

Seeing Mitski Live

This album meant so much to me that I even went and saw Mitski live in Portland. Experiencing these songs in person made me appreciate them in a new way, the intimacy of her performance, the rawness of the lyrics, and the way the crowd collectively held space for every word.

Mitski’s Sound on This Album

Mitski is generally described as alternative, with threads of indie and rock woven in, but The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We feels uniquely hers. It’s quiet in places, aching in others, sometimes chaotic, sometimes peaceful. But always genuine. Always personal.

My Ranking of the Songs

Here’s my personal track ranking, not definitive, just how they resonated with me:

  1. I’m Your Man — Soul-crushing in its self-awareness, reflecting on the pain of hurting someone who trusts you.
  2. Heaven — Gentle, calming, the same peace as a spring morning in the countryside.
  3. My Love Mine All Mine — Blissful, a reminder that love — once given — is yours forever.
  4. When Memories Snow — Chaotic in the best way, like thoughts tumbling over themselves.
  5. Bug Like an Angel — The choir here adds so much dimension, haunting and powerful.
  6. The Deal
  7. I Don’t Like My Mind
  8. Buffalo Replaced
  9. Star
  10. The Frost
  11. I Love Me After You

My Honest Take

I would rate The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We a 7.9/10. It’s very genuine, deeply personal to Mitski, but still relatable enough for you to see yourself inside it. That balance, the way one person’s emotions can reflect our own, is what makes her music special.

It’s an album I’m proud to add to my vinyl collection, not just for the songs themselves, but for what they represent: a reminder that many of us share the same emotions, even when they feel isolating.

Final Thoughts

Mitski has once again managed to create something that feels both intimate and universal. While not every track is one I’ll return to often, the album as a whole is cohesive, thoughtful, and worth experiencing in full.

If you’ve only listened to “My Love Mine All Mine,” I encourage you to go deeper. You might just find your own hidden gem inside this record.
