Not everyone is ready to walk into a gym on day one.
And even though walking outdoors has been therapeutic for me, I completely understand why that might not work for everyone either.
So today, I want to offer something else, something I’ve been doing lately that still helps me reach my goals, but from the comfort of home.
Why I Started Walking Indoors
After walking outdoors for months, the weather started getting harsh. I had explored most of my town, and I’ll be honest, I was getting bored. I needed a change before walking started feeling like a chore.
So, I dragged my family’s dusty, unused treadmill into my room and turned on my TV.
That simple switch changed everything.

Exercising From Home Gave Me a Fresh Start
Now, instead of podcasts, I binge-watch my favorite shows, mostly true crime documentaries or whatever’s been on my watchlist forever.
The time flies, I hit my step goal on my Fitbit (← link to the one I use and what all the pictures are from), and I never even have to leave my house.
Of course, walking outside still holds a special place in my heart, the fresh air, the open space, the sense of exploration.
But when it comes to sustainability, working out at home just fits my life better right now.
And if you’re in a place where going out feels overwhelming?
Or getting to a trail, a gym, or even just outside your front door is too much?
There’s no shame in staying home and making it work for you.
You Set the Rules
Speed, incline, how long you walk, all of that is up to you.
I’m not here to say you need to hit a certain number or follow a perfect plan.
Your journey is yours.
As long as you’re moving toward your goals, the way you get there is entirely your call.

My Current Treadmill Setup
I won’t lie, my treadmill is ancient.
It overheats, stutters, and makes a sound that could haunt your dreams.
So no, I won’t recommend the one I’m using.
But I will share the one that’s currently on my wishlist when this dinosaur finally gives out, and why I think it’s a great option for myself, beginners, or anyone who wants to start walking indoors without spending hundreds of dollars right away.
The Treadmill on My Wishlist
This walking pad caught my eye for a few key reasons:
-
It goes up to 3.8 mph
That’s faster than I speed walk right now, so I know it won’t hold me back. -
It supports up to 350 lbs
That’s 50 lbs more than many entry-level treadmills, which typically cap at 300. It’s more inclusive for all body types, which was one of the first things I looked for before recommending it. -
It cools itself after use
According to reviews, the fan continues running even after it’s turned off, extending the motor’s life.
(Trust me, I wish my current treadmill had that.)
It’s compact, well-reviewed, and a solid beginner investment if you’re not ready to go all in yet.
Still, I always recommend doing your own research, compare options, read reviews, and see what fits your life and budget best. For more about weight loss, my A Guide to Sustainable Weight Loss is worth a look.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re walking outside under the sun or inside with your favorite Netflix show, you’re moving forward.
You don’t need a fancy plan or a perfect setup to start.
All you need is a space, a goal, and a reason why.
Walking from home might not look exciting, but if it helps you feel stronger, more consistent, and in control of your journey,
then it’s exactly where you’re supposed to be.
